About Stephen
Why are you running?
Like many people I am bored and frustrated by the tribalistic nature of party politics, in which politicians put loyalty to their party before serving the genuine needs of residents. I believe in collaboration over conflict, and principles over party politics. As two-time Chair of Cambridgeshire County Council, as Mayor of St Neots, and as Executive Cabinet member at Huntingdonshire I brought honesty and integrity to the highest levels of local politics. Having already been elected to serve 40% of the new constituency, I think I’ve earned the right to serve the rest.
What is an independent?
An independent politician is not a member of a political party. Unlike members of political parties (such as the Liberal Democrats or the Conservatives) who are subject to “the whip”, I am free to vote with my conscience, in the best interest of residents and not the way that the party tells me to.
Can you win?
Candidates from political parties would like you to believe that Independents can’t win. However, this narrative conveniently ignores the fact that I have already been elected to serve 40% of the people in the new constituency. Other than the Conservative candidate, none of the others have been elected here at all.
That means that about 30k people in the 75k person constituency have already experienced my honest, open and accountable style of politics, which is based on principles rather than tribalistic party politics.
